Fight The Flu With Oral Hygiene

Flu season is upon us and with our busy schedules, no one has the time to spend feeling under the weather. Your oral health can play an important role in preventing and fighting the flu.

Fight The Flu With Oral Hygiene in Fallston Maryland

Fallston, MD family dentist Dr. Melissa Elliott encourages patients to practice diligent oral hygiene this flu season. Our mouths are often the gateway for the flu. Follow some of these tips for a healthier winter for you and your whole family.

Beat The Flu With Oral Hygiene

  • Cold medications can cause dry mouth. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water to avoid developing cavities.
  • Throat lozenges can stimulate saliva production reducing the negative impacts of dry mouth. Look for sugar free lozenge options to help avoid plaque build up.
  • If you vomit try not to brush immediately after to avoid the spread of acid on the surface of your teeth. Swish and spit some water or diluted mouthwash to clean out your mouth and wait about 30 minutes to brush.
  • Wash your hands, cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing and always brush and floss your teeth! Maintaining your normal oral hygiene routine is essential for a quick recovery and to avoid the potential for tooth decay.
  • Brushing and flossing can improve your mood, and make you feel a little fresher. And of course, brushing and flossing helps to fight tooth decay and other dental concerns.
  • Replace your toothbrush once you feel better to avoid the spread of germs.
  • Do not share your toothbrush with anyone. Not only can you spread germs, but you may also be spreading gum disease causing bacteria.
