Dental CrownBel Air, MD

Whether you need to replace an existing cap or have a tooth that needs a crown, Bel Air, MD dentist Dr. Umo can create a custom dental crown that looks and feels like a natural tooth.

A dental crown, sometimes called a tooth cap or tooth crown, is used to restore cracked teeth, crooked teeth, and teeth that have been compromised by a tooth cavity or teeth grinding and too damaged for a tooth filling. Dental crowns are also used in the dental bridge procedure.

Dental Crown Bel Air MD

The dentist will secure the bridge to two dental crowns. These crowns will cover the teeth on either side of the missing tooth. The dental crown covers the entire tooth, like a cap. Your dentist will permanently cement it into place.

Dr. Umo can replace metal dental crowns, broken or worn dental crowns with new, porcelain dental crowns. Replacing dental crowns is a simple procedure that can provide dramatic improvement in the appearance of the smile. A few benefits of porcelain dental crowns are:

Metal free – do not cause discoloration along the gum like conventional metal dental caps

Natural looking – porcelain dental crowns are made of layers of fine ceramic material, to match natural tooth enamel

Long lasting – porcelain dental crowns are highly durable, as well as stain resistant, meaning they will last for years to come

Dr. Umo, a Bel Air, MD dentist, may recommend a dental crown for any of the following dental problems or cosmetic concerns:

  • After a root canal
  • Restore tooth with large cavity
  • Repair broken or cracked tooth
  • Improve appearance of crooked tooth
  • Cover stained or discolored tooth
  • Close gaps between teeth
  • Lengthen teeth
  • Other cosmetic dentistry goals

Dental Crown Process

A dental crown can be fabricated from a variety of materials, depending on the location of the crown and the cosmetic goals of the patient. Your dentist will custom make them to blend in naturally with your smile as well as correct any cosmetic concerns such as the color and/or shape of the tooth.

We typically use porcelain dental crowns in our Bel Air, MD restorative dentistry office for the most natural looking results.

Initial Visit

Dr. Umo will conduct a thorough examination of your overall dental health. Using diagnostic x-rays, molds and impressions, he will look for signs of decay, stress and instability. These could compromise your results. This exam will help us to design a personalized treatment plan that will restore the tooth to optimal health and function.

Your Bel Air, MD dentist will discuss the various options you have for a dental crown and help you make the best choice.

Tooth Preparation

Once the treatment plan is ready, Dr. Umo will prepare the tooth by removing a small amount of the natural tooth structure. This is to create room for the dental crown. He will then place a temporary cap on the tooth while the dental lab is making the final restoration.

Final Restoration

In about 2 to 3 weeks, you will return to our Bel Air, MD dentist office for the delivery appointment. Dr. Umo will attach the dental crown, make any necessary adjustments and secure it for a permanent fit.
