Root Canal Bel Air, MD

Root CanalAn Overview

Dr. Melissa Elliott offers a broad range of treatments for patients with cracked or chipped teeth, severe damage or infection, or tooth decay in her Bel Air, MD dentist office. Root canals are used for patients suffering from deep-rooted decay or infection of the root canal. Root canals help to save your natural tooth for a more stable oral foundation.

Due to advancements in dentistry, the root canal process has become less painful and intrusive. Root canals can often be completed in just a single visit to our Bel Air, MD dentist office.

Dr. Elliott may recommend a root canal to restore health to a damaged or diseased tooth. A root canal serves to preserve the natural tooth and avoid tooth extraction, supporting lasting dental health.

The term root canal refers to the interior of a tooth where the pulp and nerves are located. A root canal treatment is needed when a tooth is significantly damaged or has decay that extends into the pulp chamber.

Root Canal What to Expect

Performed in the comfort of our family dentist office, a root canal is generally no more painful than a dental filling. Most patients are relieved of their tooth pain once the root canal procedure is in progress as the infected tissue is removed. The infection of the canal is what causes tooth pain, not the root canal procedure.

Prior to your treatment, Dr. Elliott will discuss the procedure with you and explain what will happen during and after the treatment. To begin the procedure, Dr. Elliott will remove the infected pulp. Removing the infected pulp will relieve any pressure caused by the infected tooth. She will then thoroughly clean the tooth and get rid of any excess material and fill it with biocompatible filling to prevent further decay. A local anesthetic will be used to ensure your comfort.

To strengthen a tooth after root canal therapy, Dr. Elliott often recommends the placement of a dental crown to help support the structure of your tooth. Custom fit and color matched to your natural teeth, a dental crown fits around the tooth like a cap and will support the long term health of your tooth.

Root canals can be completed in either one or two visits to our Bel Air, MD dentist office, depending on your particular case.
