Tooth Filling Bel Air, MD

Tooth FillingAn Overview

A cavity filling is one of the most common restorative dentistry treatments used today to address tooth decay or tooth damage. Dr. Kimberley Comeau will place a tooth filling in her Bel Air, MD dentist office to restore dental health and prevent further tooth damage. For patients with mild to moderate tooth decay, a tooth filling is a safe and effective dental treatment.

What is a Dental Filling?

A tooth filling is part of a conservative treatment plan used to save the natural tooth. This restorative treatment is used when a tooth is weakened because of cracks, chips, breaks, tooth cavity or other reasons. The filling is intended to not just restore strength, but to protect the tooth from future damage or decay.

Replacing Metal Dental Fillings

Modern advances in cosmetic dentistry mean that you no longer need to suffer from unsightly and uncomfortable silver/mercury fillings or metal margins around the gum line. Dr. Comeau is able to replace old, broken-down amalgam (metal) fillings with white fillings for a more comfortable and natural looking restoration.

We can replace your old metal dental filling at our office. Restore your smile and dental health by replacing metal fillings with white composite fillings.

Tooth Filling What to Expect

Composite Resin (White Fillings)

Our Bel Air, MD cosmetic dentistry office uses only tooth-colored dental fillings. “White” dental fillings are durable, attractive and highly compatible. A white filling will blend in seamlessly with your natural smile.

Composite fillings are bonded to your tooth structure for greater durability. Though they are not as long-lasting as other types of fillings, composite fillings will last many years or more with proper care and maintenance.

In most cases, little or no existing tooth structure needs to be removed to install a composite resin filling compared to gold, porcelain or amalgam (silver) fillings, preserving more of the natural tooth.

Tooth Filling Process

In most cases, your dental filling can be placed during a single visit to our Bel Air, MD dentist office. Using a local anesthetic for your comfort, Dr. Comeau will prepare the affected tooth and clean all surfaces before skillfully placing the composite resin material and sculpting it into place.

Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are custom made porcelain dental fillings that are fabricated in a dental lab. This type of tooth filling, sometimes called a partial crown, is used to restore a tooth with more advanced tooth decay with larger areas of damage or decay.

This is a more conservative treatment than a tooth extraction and more secure than a traditional tooth filling. Inlays and onlays are tooth colored and will resist staining. A porcelain restoration generally covers most of the tooth, making the filling nearly undetectable.
