Preventing Gum Disease

At Harford County Dentistry in Fallston, MD, your oral health is important to us. General dentist Dr. Melissa Elliot takes the time to address your dental concerns and provide the most effective treatment for your needs. We work with you to improve the quality of your oral health.

However, it is important that patients do their part at home to maintain a healthy smile. Gum disease is a common dental concern that many patients develop when they don’t follow a proper oral hygiene routine.

There are other factors that can contribute to the development of gum disease, but we encourage our patients to practice healthy oral health habits to promote optimal oral health.

Preventing Gum Disease

Gum disease is the inflammation and infection of the gums that can lead to advanced dental issues like tooth loss if not properly treated. Patients with gum disease may notice symptoms like bleeding gums, halitosis, shifting teeth, swollen gums, and toothaches.

At Harford County Dentistry, we believe that preventive dental care is key to the success of each patient. Gum disease is preventable if you take the necessary steps to care for your teeth.

  • Visit Our Fallston, MD dental office twice a year for preventive care visits. During preventive care visits, Dr. Elliot will perform a thorough, comprehensive exam to check for complex dental problems like TMJ, bite disorder, oral cancer, and gum disease. Preventive care visits allow Dr.  Elliot to spot early signs of advanced dental issues and provide the most efficient dental treatment to solve your dental problems. If gum disease is caught it its earliest stage, Dr. Elliot may be able to reverse the effects of gingivitis and restore health to your smile.
  • Practice a proper oral hygiene routine. Effectively cleaning your teeth reduces the amount of plaque and debris that sticks to your teeth and can cause gum disease.  Brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing, and using an antibacterial mouthwash can get rid of any harmful bacteria that may lead to gum disease.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet. Your diet can contribute to the overall health of your smile. Consuming sweet and sugary foods can affect the health of your teeth, especially if it isn’t properly cleaned off of the teeth.
  • Eliminate smoking and tobacco use. Smoking and tobacco use may increase your chance of developing gum disease.
